Tiny Enhancer: Zvox AccuVoice AV203 TV Speaker

Audio Performance
Features
Build Quality
Value
PRICE $270

AT A GLANCE
Plus
Super compact
Nice build quality
Easy to set up and use
AccuVoice modes aid the hearing impaired
Minus
Sound could be fuller
Surround sound is subtle

THE VERDICT
The AV203 TV speaker just might be a godsend for viewers with hearing loss who have difficulty discerning voices and movie dialogue.

The small rectangular box sat in my foyer for days before I realized it was the Zvox soundbar I’d been waiting for. My god, this thing is small, I thought as I pulled the AccuVoice AV203 TV Speaker out of the box. I was immediately impressed with its heft and build quality and as curious as ever about how the diminutive bar would perform.

Dali Callisto 6 C Wireless Loudspeakers Review

Performance
Features
Ergonomics
Value
PRICE $5,747 (as tested)

AT A GLANCE
Plus
Rich, dynamic sound
Easy setup and reliable wireless performance
Uses BluOS app for streaming
Minus
Utilitarian looks
Kinda pricey

THE VERDICT
DALI’s Callisto 6 C towers provide a reliable option for high-performance wireless hi-fi, as well as high-res multiroom streaming when paired with the BluOS NPM-1 module.

Active speakers that deliver sound via wireless connections have become a hot category in the hi-fi world. Sound & Vision has reviewed a wide range of them—everything from cheap, compact cylinders that sit on your kitchen counter and respond to voice commands, to more advanced systems designed to deliver stereo or 5.1 sound in a living room or home theater environment. The new Callisto line from Denmark's DALI (Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries) belongs to the latter category. You'll find no tiny drivers or molded plastic cabinets here, let alone a built-in intelligent assistant of the Google, Alexa, or Siri stripe. Instead, the Callistos merge the convenience of wireless audio with a traditional approach to high-end speaker design.

HBO Announces an Eclectic Mix of Downloads for April

So much to watch, so little time. HBO has announced its lineup for April, an eclectic mix of TV series with a movie, a couple documentaries, and a newsmagazine series thrown in for good measure. All of the releases are digital downloads except for My Brilliant Friend and Icebox, which are being released on DVD. Guess someone thinks DVD is good enough for those titles — at least for now.

LG Rolls Out its 2019 Ultra HDTVs

Shortly after sending out formal press releases for its 2019 television and audio lineups earlier this month (the products were first shown at the 2019 CES in January), LG held a March 20th press event in New York to expand on the details. LG began by noting that of the 36+ million sets sold in the U.S. market alone in 2018, only 2.4 million were priced above $1000. Also notable is that 36% of the TVs sold in the U.S. for over $2000 were 70-inches or above. Globally, however, large sizes aren’t as popular.

The 2019 LG product rollout will begin in April with the new 65-inch E9 and C9 OLEDs, with others to follow in May and June. Pricing on the OLEDs will range from $12,999 for the 77-inch W9 (June) to $2499 for the 55-inch C9 (April). The MSRP for the 65-inch C9 (April) is $3499. Its 77-inch C9 sibling (May) will cost you $6999. The least pricey LG OLEDs, the B9s, should be available later but were otherwise not covered at the event. No prices or details were given for the B9s, nor for LG’s NanoCell (LCD) sets.

LG isn’t jumping onto the 8K bandwagon for 2019, or at least not yet...

Klipsch R-41M Speaker System Review

Speakers
Performance
Build Quality
Value
Subwoofer
Performance
Features
Build Quality
Value
PRICE $996 (as tested)

AT A GLANCE
Plus
Dynamic and lively sound
Good stereo and surround sound imaging
Minus
Requires careful setup for best performance
Basic black finish only

THE VERDICT
Klipsch’s R-41M speaker system amply demonstrates how a 5.1 surround package can outperform a same-priced soundbar. Enthusiastically recommended for both movies and music.

Putting together a home theater system on a limited budget can be a daunting task. That's why so many people instead take the easy route and buy a soundbar to handle audio. Sure, a one- or two-box (with subwoofer) solution is simple to shop for and a snap to hook up, but what about the sound quality? With soundbars, the amplifiers, speakers, and signal processing are all designed to work together in an integrated unit, so it's often possible to squeeze surprisingly big and powerful sound out of the bar's tiny drivers.

KEF R5 Surround Speaker System Review

Value
PRICE $10,200 (as tested)

AT A GLANCE
Plus
Sweet, clean highs
Superb dialogue clarity
Detailed but not aggressive sound
Minus
Slightly limited treble diffusion
R3s make for pricey surrounds

THE VERDICT
With a sweet balance on music and potent, but not aggressive, manner with movies, KEF’s R-series system delivers all-around outstanding performance.

KEF'S R Series speakers have long occupied the middle range of the British manufacturer's offerings. While the previous R Series was starting to get a bit long in the tooth, I found the performance of those speakers to be superb, having reviewed the last generation R700 for Sound & Vision's sister publication Stereophile in 2014.

PEEX Technology Brings Live Music into Sharp Focus

How much would you be willing to pay to improve the sound of a live concert put on by one of your all-time favorite artists? That was one of many questions I pondered as walked to my seat at Elton John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour last week at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. The Little Mermaid and Other Musings

Maybe I’m just in a bad mood from having dental surgery yesterday, or maybe there’s something odd happening at Disney these days. But what, exactly, is going on with some of their Ultra HD Blu-ray soundtracks.

Some of their recent releases have problems you wouldn’t expect. They’re not fatal, but do suggest inconsistency.

First we have to go back a few years to the release of Frozen. It’s not yet available on Ultra HD Blu-ray (why not ?), but when I reviewed it I was a little disappointed in the sound. I’ve subsequently been able to let it go and enjoy it, but it still appears to lack a bit of the air and dynamic punch I hear from the best Disney titles.

Then, more recently, came Thor: Ragnarok. It was criticized by some for being mastered at a low level (significantly lower than the level used for the menus) and for its limited bass—or at least limited compared to the expectations set by other Disney Marvel movies.

I recently gave a (not yet published) review of Ralph Breaks the Internet and complained about the sound there as well. A re-listen after press deadline, and after re-tweaking my system, left me with a much more positive feeling about it. But it still fell a bit short of what I expected, given the best sounding recent Disney titles such as Avengers: Infinity War. Perhaps I was just being too picky given the different requirements of the two films.

I recently picked up the Ultra Blu-ray release of Disney’s The Little Mermaid and was initially disappointed in its audio track as well...
