The Rise of the Smart Kitchen: Bosch and Drop Lead the Charge

If Bosch and Drop have their way, we’ll all be cooking like master chefs. The two makers of smart kitchen appliances have paired up to streamline the cooking process–basically doing away with the need for measuring cups, reading recipes, or preheating your oven. It’s a huge step toward a truly smart, nearly automated kitchen, and here’s how it works:

Meal preparation all begins with your smartphone or tablet, as do so many other activities in your home these days. And according to Drop, 60 percent of Millennials use their smartphones when cooking so the time is ripe for interactive meal preparation.

drop1-2Using Drop’s interactive recipe app, you find what you’d like to make, be it blueberry muffins or a tuna casserole. The app feeds data to Drop’s Connected Kitchen Scale so that it can determine when you’ve added enough of a particular ingredient. Meanwhile, the app guides you through the process, asking you to simply “add flour.” As you sift flour into a bowl that’s placed on the scale, it monitors the amount. Once the scale senses that the appropriate amount of flour has been added, the app tells you to stop. There’s no need to pull out your measuring cups or spoons—the scale and app walk you through every step.

The partnership between Drop and Bosch takes this concept one step further. As the Drop Connected Kitchen Scale charts your progress, it signals the Bosch Series 8 oven with Home Connect technology to begin preheating per the recipe instructions at just the right time. The oven also receives instructions on the cooking time and will turn off automatically when the dish is finished.

The Drop and Bosch pairing are just the beginning of what’s in store for the connected kitchen, says Drop CEO Ben Harris. “We plan to work with other manufacturers of kitchen appliances and so that we can communicate with everything from blenders and stand mixers to refrigerators and microwave ovens. “Imagine the Drop app being able to suggest a recipe based on the items stocked in your refrigerator.”

Drop’s Connected Kitchen Scale retails for $79.99; the Drop app is available to download for free from the Apple App Store.
