FCC Eyes App Criterion

The Federal Communications Commission and the cable industry are agreed that the next generation of digital cable readiness should be app-based. But for which devices should the cable industry be required to offer a cable-ready app? The FCC came up with a modest proposal: Any platform that ships more than five million units in a given year must get an app. The intriguing news came as various interest groups (not entirely within the pay-TV industry) continued to carp about the FCC initiative, Congress was threatening to interfere, and an FCC vote loomed in which the commission would finally commit to its vision of the future of cable-ready TVs and source components after a long period of study and comment.
