How to Turn Your Phone into a Smart Smoke Detector

Slide open a drawer, yank open a cabinet door, there’s probably an old mobile phone sitting there doing nothing but taking up space. You can breathe new life into it by downloading a new app from CleverLoop. Called Smokey, the free app basically turns your phone into a smart smoke detector. In fact, you can download the app into several phones and so that you can hear the alarm no matter where you are in your house.

Smokey, which works on both Android and iOS mobile phones and tablets, listens for your wired smoke detectors’ beeps or chirps. When it hears it, it automatically sends you an alert via SMS, email, or both to your current smartphone. You can then decide what to do, be it calling emergency services or family members to alert them of the situation.

“Being in the smart home security business, we are always thinking about ways to make our customers more secure and to give them peace of mind,” says CleverLoop CMO Richard Smith. “We found the most efficient and cost effective solution for smart smoke detection was to enable users to reuse their old devices with an easy-to-use app.”

There are a few requirements for Smokey to work: The touch sensors on the screen of your smartphone must still be intact, the battery jack needs to be in working order, and of course, the microphone must be in good working condition. You’ll also need either a Wi-Fi or 3G/4G connection (if you can connect the phone to Wi-Fi, you won’t need a working SIM connected to a mobile network provider). Finally, pairing Smokey with a CleverLoop surveillance camera will provide even greater peace of mind.
