Find Your Lost Wallet Fast: New Tagging Tech Helps You Find Misplaced Items

Think about all the things you carry with you on a business trip: phone, passport, wallet, keys, laptop, chargers, headphones, etc. It’s a lot to keep track of and for some of us these essential items can be really easy to misplace.  Yes, I’ve even left my coat at the airport. I’ve also misplaced my keys (almost daily), and my heart has fallen to the pit of my stomach a time or two when I’ve left my trusty notebook in the ladies room during CES and other trade shows.

My son inherited my absentmindedness, and now that he’s in college Mom’s not there to scour his room for his money clip. That’s why I’m really excited about a new product called GearEye. Currently available on Kickstarter for $119, GearEye pairs your smartphone and smart RFID stickers (super thin and no more than 1 inch wide by 3 inches tall) that adhere to items that you can’t bear losing. Should you leave a restaurant without your keys, for example, the app will alert you before you even reach your car.

The GearEye was developed with professional photographers in mind, giving them an easy, affordable way to keep tabs on their expensive lenses and other items in their camera bags. Also, the technology isn’t intended to track stolen gear, as the range between the reader and RFID stickers is only 10 feet. Still, even if you aren’t a photographer, it’s a system that could definitely save anyone, from a busy professional packing up for a business trip to a college student rushing out of a dorm room for an 8 a.m. class, a lot of time and hassle.

The system comes with a RFID reader in the form of a smartphone case (or a remote) and 20 RFID stickers. Just make sure you don’t lose your cellphone!

wallorOh… and this just in: There’s a wallet recently announced on Kickstarter works in a similar fashion. Embedded with Bluetooth and GPS chips, the slim leather wallet dispatches a message to your smartphone. It works in reverse too: Tap the wallet twice and you’ll be able to find your misplaced smartphone. The “Wallor” connected wallet, developed by Wallor Wearables, is expected to be available May 2017 for about $215.
