Ikea is joining the ranks of Amazon and Apple, bringing smart home control to consumers with the promise of an easy setup and attractive price tag. The furniture store’s smart lighting line is called Trådfri, which means “wireless” in Swedish.
In line with what is perhaps the most popular smart lighting solution on the market, Philips Hue, the Ikea smart lighting range is built around the ZigBee Light Link standard for connected lights.
The line launched in the U.K. in late March, and pricing was available on Ikea’s U.S. website in early April.
Included in the Ikea Smart Lighting Collection:
- LED bulbs (starting at $11.99)
- Gateway ($29.99) and gateway kit ($79.99)
- Motion sensor kit ($24.99)
- Dimming lights (starting at $19.99)
- Remote control ($12.99)
The heart of the system is the gateway device, which uses Ethernet to connect to the Internet and create a local network called, guess what, Trådfri.
The gateway kit (shown above) includes the Internet gateway, a remote control, and two bulbs. The Trådfri app offers personalized presets of warm or cool light.
In a promotional video (below), Ikea shows how the motion-controlled dimmer switch can be used to dim lights by rolling the “switch” in your hand.

The U.K. release mentioned LED light panels and doors designed to be fitted into kitchen cabinets, but these products were not featured on the U.S. website at the time of writing.
Currently Ikea is carrying warm and cool whites, but no colors just yet.
