The “Nocturne” design adds a futuristic look to the LS50 speakers. The front design draws design, to me, cues from the Star Wars universe. The color scheme on the front is reminiscent of the Star Destroyer and its massive laser beam. This is what art and design is all about and is somewhat fitting given the way in which the Star Wars franchise revolutionized sound performance in the film industry.
You see what you want in a product, and this design speaks to a movie icon of my childhood. Maybe to you, it looks like high-tech binoculars, or maybe it looks like an astronomy project. Whatever you see when looking at this product, the glow in the dark cues on the front of the speaker will surely add a stunning visual element in the dark. TiVo Corporation is jumping into the voice control camp with its new $199.99 TiVo BOLT VOX and $179.99 TiVo Mini VOX. The latest device lineup includes TiVo’s first voice control remote – the $39.99 TiVo VOX Remote, with which viewers can use their voice to search for programs across live TV, DVR, video-on-demand and online streaming services. The new TiVo products also include access to the on-screen TiVo user experience with built-in personalized recommendations and intelligent predictions.
The TiVo BOLT VOX provides a personalized and unified entertainment experience, combining the features of TiVo’s DVR with online streaming services controlled by a single voice-powered remote control. The new TiVo Mini VOX allows viewers to expand the experience to other rooms in the house with up to 4K Ultra HD picture quality and no additional service fees.

TiVo features like SkipMode and OnePass have also been enhanced to work with voice control. Or, say “Create a OnePass for Modern Family” and TiVo’s universal search feature will assemble episodes of “Modern Family” from multiple online sources and upcoming live broadcasts into one view.
In addition to voice, the TiVo BOLT VOX and TiVo Mini VOX feature the latest TiVo on-screen user experience that can deliver personalized program predictions influenced by actual viewing habits. Poster art, actor and director biographies, sports team logos and more help viewers quickly find the shows they want and skip the ones they don’t.
TiVo’s new QuickView feature allows viewers to see shows playing on different built-in tuners, favorite channels, a one-line channel guide, and TiVo’s new SmartBar, a personalized prediction of shows to watch at that time influenced by prior viewing behavior – without leaving the TV viewing experience.
“With our new on-screen experience and VOX Remote, scrolling through endless TV guides and painstakingly entering search terms is finally a thing of the past,” says Malone. “BOLT VOX is the only platform that combines the complete pay TV experience with major OTT services into a single user experience, on one input, controlled by one remote, with unified voice search across multiple sources.”
The TiVo BOLT VOX includes four integrated tuners, allowing viewers to watch or record up to 75 HD hours (500GB model), or 150 HD hours (1TB model) of digital cable or over-the-air (antenna) programming. A 450-hour (3TB) version of the TiVo BOLT VOX includes six integrated tuners and is for use only with digital cable systems.
The TiVo Mini VOX enables BOLT owners to expand their voice-powered 4K Ultra HD experience to additional rooms without needing to pay additional fees. The TiVo BOLT VOX is priced starting at $199.99 for the 500GB model and the TiVo Mini VOX is available for $179.99.
Existing TiVo BOLT, TiVo Roamio and first-generation TiVo Mini customers can upgrade to voice control by purchasing a separate TiVo VOX Remote. The VOX Remote for BOLT is available in either black or white and is priced at $39.99. Fourth quarter sales of smart speakers could reach nearly 12 million units worldwide, says a report by Strategy Analytics. This brings the full-year sales total to 24 million units. LG’s 2017 OLEDs are already among the best TVs money can buy, although a firmware upgrade is set to make them even better. That’s thanks to added support for Dolby TrueHD lossless audio, a format that will further enhance the existing Dolby Atmos 3D surround sound supported by the sets.
Dolby has had a close relationship with LG over the past few years, with the company’s OLED TVs being some of the first to support the Dolby Vision HDR format. The TVs were also the first to get both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, so it’s not all that surprising that they’re the first to receive TrueHD support.

Normally, when you think of McIntosh audio, there are two things that usually come to mind – pure sound and reliability. These two traits have helped foster the legendary status this storied brand has developed over the past 68 years, but this audio nirvana comes with one caveat – size.

As many of us have noticed, utility companies are replacing flat-rate power pricing with time-of-day-based pricing models. For consumers, this new “time-variant pricing (TVP)” structure can be a good thing, especially when technology can help you save money. Smart home automation systems can control when your dishwasher and clothes washer starts, for example, or can monitor the temperature inside your freezer or refrigerator and cycle those appliances less frequently.
But before you can save via TVP, you must understand it first. TVP pricing comes in many different forms, but the basic Idea is that pricing is cheaper during nonpeak hours. This is when your utility offers incentives to use power during non-peak hours.
At first glance, it may sound bad that prices are rising, but it can be a great benefit to those who use the system to their advantage. Smart devices like a smart thermostat can help you avoid using big energy during peak hours, making sure you are only paying for energy at the cheapest time of the day. In addition, green energy sources like solar and battery back-up systems can sometimes earn homeowners rebates for helping the utility lower the pressure on their grid. In some cases, reduced stress on the energy infrastructure can result in lower costs for the utility company, which could pass those savings on to you. A recent study by an Oklahoma power company found that if 20 percent of its users switched to time-variant pricing, it wouldn’t need to build a power relay station to keep up with demand. Moreover, that same utility found that clients who switched to TVP saved $200 per year in energy costs.
According to the Environmental Defense Fund, here are the 5 most common types of TVP:
Real-time pricing (RTP): Prices vary frequently over the course of the day to reflect fluctuating electricity costs.
Time-of-use pricing (TOU): The day is broken into two or three periods of time (e.g., peak period, off-peak period, interim period); prices vary by period, but remain consistent from day to day.
Variable peak pricing (VPP): Similar to TOU pricing, except that peak period prices change daily to reflect system conditions and costs.
Critical peak pricing (CPP): A critical event is identified when the price may increase dramatically to reflect system conditions.
Critical peak rebate (CPR): Similar to CPP, except that customers are paid for cutting back on electricity during critical events relative to the amount they normally use.

The average homeowner is likely to feel overwhelmed by all the different options and types of solar panels available on the market today. So let’s look at the different types of solar cells, focusing on photovoltaic solar cells, and their benefits and disadvantages.
Crystalline Silicon — Crystalline silicon is the most commonly distributed form of solar panel, making up as much as 95 percent of all shipments in the United States as recently as 2011. The focus for a consumer should be on the purity of the silicone, which increases the efficiency of the solar panels.
Mono-Crystalline — Mono-crystalline stands for the singular crystalline structure. This type of solar panel is characterized by its uniform color and the cylindrical shape of the cells. The advantage of mono-crystalline cells is they are highly efficient. In addition, it is highly space efficient and enjoys a longer lifetime than the average solar panel. As you can imagine the disadvantage is cost: process of manufacturing the refined silicone creates a lot of waste and thus drives up cost.
Poly-Crystalline — A multi-crystalline structure means the silicone is less refined, which means the individual cells are less efficient. But, the solar panels cost considerably less, due to lest waste during production. The main drawback is they have mediocre performance compared to the mono-crystalline units.
Thin-Film Cells — Thin-film photovoltaic cells are the new up-and-comer, showing a 60 percent growth every year from 2002 to 2007, and carving out about 5 percent of the market. They currently average less efficiency but recent advancements expect to increase the efficiency rating considerably. They are cheaper to produce because they are easily mass produced and show greater resistance to losses in efficiency from things like heat and shading. The disadvantage of thin-film cells is in the amount of space needed to make them viable.
Finding the right type of solar panel really boils down to the amount of space available to install them. If you only have a small amount of space, mono-crystalline might be the way to go if you can overcome the cost. If you’re looking for a cheaper option and space isn’t as much an issue, poly-crystalline may be your best option. And if you not in the market right now, keep an eye on thin-film cells for the future.

“I love Halloween,” Ashu says. “I have always decorated for it, but decided last year to make it more interactive. I really wanted to build a haunted house, but was concerned about liability.
The alternative was to turn his own home into a quasi-haunted house—accomplished by the integration of several pieces of smart home technology.

With the holiday shopping season right around the corner, Amazon leverages its speedy at home delivery service by offering Prime members the chance to view their packages being left on the doorstop live and unlock the door for delivery people—remotely from a smartphone app. The innovative service, called Amazon Key, comes with all the equipment you need to prepare your home, and access to one-click in-home delivery—at no extra charge.
Prime members can pre-order the Amazon Key In-Home Kit (starts at $249.99), which includes an Amazon Cloud Cam and one of several compatible smart locks from Yale and Kwikset. Customers can install the kit themselves or call on one of Amazon’s technicians for free professional installation.
Once the kit is installed, customers order much like they always have with the addition of selecting “in home” delivery before placing their orders. Each time a delivery driver requests access to a customer’s home, Amazon verifies that the correct driver is at the correct address, at the intended time, through an encrypted authentication process. Once the process is complete, the Cloud Cam starts recording and the smart lock is unlocked. Customers receive a notification on their smartphones when the delivery driver arrives and leaves.
The service also offers keyless access for family and friends. Customers can set up the frequency and length of time a person is granted access, and ad or remote contacts as they see fit.
The service rolls out on November 8 in 37 cities, with additional cities to be added. Amazon Key applies to Same-Day, One-Day, Two-Day, and Standard Shipping.
In the coming months, Amazon Key will provide Prime customers with interactive, remote service scheduling of other providers, including Merry Maids, and pet sitters and dog walkers on Rover.com.

With so many home security systems on the market, it can be difficult to choose which one to have installed in your home. Most systems provide ample protection and are easy to use. Couple this with the installation know-how of a highly skilled professional security integrator, and you really can’t go wrong. Still, it never hurts to dig deeper.
J.D. Power, a global leader in consumer insights, advisory services and data and analytics, has released the results of its 2017 Home Security Satisfaction Study. It reports that in the growing professionally installed and monitored home/residential security market, overall customer satisfaction with home security brands is high relative to other at-home studies on such things as windows and patio doors; home improvement retailers; clothes washers and dryers; and dishwashers. The 2017 Home Security Satisfaction Study revealed that, on a 1,000-point scale, overall customer satisfaction for home security is 831, compared with all other at-home studies at 825.
In the J.D. press announcement, Greg Truex, senior director of the At-Home Practice at J.D. Power, states that “There’s a clear connection between a customer’s level of product knowledge and level of satisfaction. Satisfaction is crucial because it leads to more recommendations and increased brand loyalty, which are important in such a big industry.”
Vivint Smart Home (851) ranked highest in customer satisfaction among home security brands. The 2017 Home Security Satisfaction Study measures customer satisfaction with professionally installed and monitored home/residential security brands by examining four factors (in alphabetical order): billing and payment; customer service; enrollment; and usage.
Vivint Smart Home performed well in J.D. Power’s high importance attributes, which are: effectiveness of securing my home; ease of using the system; timeliness of resolving problem, question or request; and clarity of information provided for customer service. Guardian Protection Services (841) ranked second and AT&T (Digital Life) and MONI (839) ranked third in a tie.
The study is based on responses from 3,134 customers who own a professionally installed and monitored home/residential security system and was fielded in August-September 2017.

If speakers are placed near windows they often become faded on the exterior. In addition, if the drivers were exposed to sunlight, they might show signs of cracking on the rubber surrounding the drivers.

In the commercial market, the use of laser-based projectors has risen exponentially thanks to its low-maintenance requirements, color fidelity and brightness levels. Optoma is bringing laser technologies to a new price point in the residential home theater market with its new UHZ65 laser 4K projector.

The company says its latest UltraHD projector is able to produce 4K images as large as 140 inches from as far as 11 feet away.
Utilizing a laser-phosphor light engine, along with Texas Instruments’ (TI) 4K DLP UHD chipset that includes XPR video processing to display 8.3 million pixels, the projector offers PureEngine’s PureMotion imaging processing technology that is said to eliminate noise, motion blur and judder in fast-motion video to enable clear images.
Through the UHZ65’s laser-light engine, the projector produces up to 3,000 lumens of brightness and contrast levels as high as 2,000,000:1 with Dynamic Black enabled.

We all know what the Internet is. But there’s a relatively new term that you should know about: Internet of Things. Exactly what is the Internet of Things, or IoT? Basically, it’s anything (everyday gadgets and objects) that connects to the Internet. This could be your smart TV that pulls content from the Internet, a water sensor that uses the Internet to notify you via smartphone that there’s a leak in the basement, a surveillance camera that lets you peek in on happenings around the house while you’re miles away, and a host of other connected devices.
Research firm Gartner forecasts that 8.4 million connected things (Internet of Things; IoT) will be in use worldwide in 2017, up 31 percent from 2016, and will reach 20.4 billion by 2020. That’s a lot of smart devices communicating over the Internet … and it’s impact on our homes, our lives and our world will be huge.
There are a lot of factors making IoT as commonplace as facial tissues. First, broadband in the home is nearly ubiquitous. It gives your home and the devices inside it a connection to the outside world.
